17th President’s Message (Fumiyoshi Yamashita)

Current President’s Message

Greetings from the 17th President of Japanese Society for the Study of Xenobiotics (JSSX)

As the successor to former President Dr. Yoshiro Saito, I was appointed the 17th President at the Delegate Assembly held during the Takasaki Annual Meeting, 2021. Remembering the eminent presidents who have made our society grow, I am sobered by the heavy responsibility I have been given. Together with the President Elect Prof. Yukio Kato of Kanazawa University and other members of the 17th Board of Directors, I will do my utmost to contribute to the development of our society. I would like to ask all of you, our members, for your support for the activities of the society.

JSSX has always led the world as a scientific core for pharmacokinetic research, focusing on metabolic enzymes and transporters, thanks to the activities of its successive presidents, councilors, representatives, and members. The journal DMPK, published by the Society, has also recorded an impact factor of 3.614 for the year 2020, firmly establishing its position as an international journal. One of the missions of the new Board of Directors is to further promote internationalization. Although the joint annual meeting with the ISSX scheduled for 2020 in Hawaii Island was cancelled due to the impact of COVID-19, it has been decided to hold the joint annual meeting in 2024 as a revenge, where Dr. Kiyomi Ito of Musashino University will serve as a co-chair. In addition to the 2023 Annual Meeting, which is co-hosted with the International P450 Conference (Chair: Dr. Kouichi Yoshinari), we will continue to co-host international conferences and work to strengthen international collaboration. We also continue the international collaboration among the four Asian countries (Korea, China, Thailand, and Japan) that began in the 15th term, and we hope to resume mutual exchange in person this year. In order to promote international exchanges, it is essential to disseminate information in English and conduct public relations activities. We would like to establish an IT infrastructure, including the introduction of a machine translation system, and build an environment that will allow us to speedily disseminate new information. Besides, we would like to work on multimedia information dissemination through the use of video and other media in order to improve member services.

As mentioned above, the board members will work together to implement a variety of initiatives, but the power of the members remains the power of the organization. I would like to ask all of you, the members, to continue your active participation in the activities of the society, and to support and cooperate with us in the growth and development of the Society. I look forward to working with you over the next two years.
